(a) Change the following into indirect form of speech: (i) Her mother said to me, "How old are you?" (ii) Jaya asked Ramesh, "Where do you live?"

(b) Combine the following sentences as directed within the brackets: (i) It was cold. No one went out. (simple sentence) (ii) I bought a pen. It was costly. (complex sentence)

(c) Transform the following sentences as directed within the brackets: (i) Iron is more useful than any other metal. (superlative) (ii) Open all the windows. (passive)

(d) Correct four of the following sentences: (i) Mumps is a dangerous disease. (ii) This book is my. (iii) You are junior than me. (iv) He is best boy in the class. (v) If you will come I shall help you. (vi) Neither of these children have stolen your pen.

(a) Translate the following into English: एक बार एक चित्रकार एक महल को सजा रहा था। जब वह दीवारों को रंग रहा था, तब उसके हृदय में अपने कार्य को दूर से देखने की इच्छा हुई। पीछे हटते-हटते वह चबूतरे के छोर तक पहुँच गया। यदि वह एक कदम और पीछे हट जाता तो वह पृथ्वी पर गिर पड़ता। उसके नौकर ने उसे देख लिया। उसने एकदम दीवार पर रंग का बर्तन फेंक दिया। नौकर के व्यवहार पर चित्रकार को क्रोध आया। वह तुरन्त उसे दण्ड देने के लिए आगे बढ़ा। नौकर ने रंग फेंकने का कारण बताया। तब उस चित्रकार ने खुश होकर नौकर को बहुत सारा इनाम दिया।

(b) Translate the following into Hindi: It is true that science changes and there is nothing final about it. But the method of science does not change and it is true that we must concentrate our thoughts and activities in research, in social life, in political and economic life, in religion. We may be made of earth but that earth contains something that is the spirit and mind of man. Through the ages, this has grown and made itself the master of this universe, and brought the products of nature to its use. More wonderful than the earth and the heavens is this spirit and mind of man which grows ever mightier and seeks fresh world to conquer.

Write an essay on one of the following topics in about 250 words: (i) Preservation of Tigers (ii) Educational Tour (iii) Child Labour (iv) Miracles of Science (v) Honesty in Politics

Write a letter to your friend congratulating him on winning the first prize in a painting competition. OR Write a letter to your District Magistrate complaining to him about corruption in a government office. (Note: Do not write your name and address in the letter)

Read the following passages carefully and answer the questions that follow: We become conscious of our weakness the moment we are placed in some responsible position.
